Meat consumption and the Environment
The increasing number of farm animals being reared for meat and dairy produce is now a major cause of climate change. The latest report from the United Nations which is the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations /report 2006 ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’ confirms that the livestock sector is responsible for 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions - more than the whole of the transport sector. This increase in meat production is simply unsustainable.

Home Office figures released
The Home Office figures have now been released and show that more than 3.2 million experiments using animals were carried
out in 2007. This is a 6% rise on 2006. There were significant increases in the number of tests using dogs, mice, fish and domestic fowl. There was no anaesthetic used in 61% of procedures and despite New Labours pre-election promises to reduce the number of experiments involving animals what has actually occurred is a 21% rise in these since they came to power in 1997.

New German initiative on alternatives to animal research
The Directive governing research across Europe requires that anyone wanting to use animals must first properly evaluate whether the research in question can be done without them. Vivisection defenders often cite this requirement as ‘proof’ that all reasonable steps are taken to avoid the use of animals. In reality however applicants for licences feels no genuine pressure from the Home Office to go in search of non-animal methods. Proctor and Gamble
Proctor and Gamble continue to fund animal experiments and Uncaged have run a very successful campaign to boycott Herbal Essences shampoo since it was discovered that P and G had sacrificed hundreds of pregnant rats and their offspring to test a chemical ingredient in their Herbal Essences range of shampoos and conditioners.
