ABOUT THE MUSIC - INTERVIEWS WITH COMPOSERS

Mark Bowden’s Voice on the Air is a compelling and eerie look at the future, where a community lives under the sea, isolated from the outside world and communicating only by screens. This is a reworking of a duet from his new opera Sea Change for Welsh National Opera.

Sarah Jenkins’s The Causeway is inspired by childhood walks across the St Helens Duver Causeway on the Isle of Wight, the experience of walking, remembering and being close to loved ones.

In Ashley John Long’s Shadow Play the music is repeated or echoed between instruments, sometimes transformed or extended like shadow images.

Claire Victoria Roberts’ Lust and Lustre contrasts passionate, romantic melody with glistening

textures, posing the question: ‘Which is it that blinds us the most, lust, or glimmering, gleaming, lustrous light? ‘

Robert Fokkens has woven data from his running app into his new piece, Lavernock Loops, which was inspired by his daily exercise routine during lockdown, where he would run along the rocky clifftops from Penarth to Lavernock.

Filidei’s Finito ogni gesto is a moving memorial to one of Italy’s leading cultural figures, the poet Edoardo Sanguineti,

Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Entropic Arrows erupts from a violent explosion of sound, descending to calm pure harmonies as the piece progresses.
