Composing Workshop for young people aged 14-18 with musicians from UPROAR - 8 February 2026
An opportunity for young people in Years 10 - 13 (ages 14 - 18) to compose guided by professional composer David John Roche and 4 instrumentalists and conductor from the UPROAR ensemble. David John Roche was one of the commissioned composers in our spring tour 2025 which performed at SOAR in March last year. He grew up in Tredegar and his music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles throughout the world.
The workshops will be invaluable for anyone who loves creating their own music and will help develop their composition skills. It is ideal for anyone studying towards their GCSE, BTEC, or A-level in music. Each workshop will end with a performance for family and friends and a recording made.
Participants will spend an intensive day learning techniques, gaining ideas and trying new things out with UPROAR’s professional musicians who will be on hand throughout the day.
The workshop will take place at Theatr SOAR, Merthyr Tydfil on Sunday 8th February 2026 from 9.45 to 16.45.
No preparation is needed in advance of the workshops.

An opportunity for young people in Years 10 - 13 (ages 14 - 18) to compose guided by professional composer and double bassist Ashley John Long and 4 instrumentalists from the UPROAR ensemble. Ashley is one of the commissioned composers on our spring tour. He is also the bass player in the UPROAR ensemble and lecturer in Composition at Cardiff University.
The workshops will be invaluable for anyone who loves creating their own music and will help develop their composition skills. It is ideal for anyone studying towards their GCSE, BTEC, or A-level in music. Each workshop will end with a performance for family and friends and a recording made.
Participants will spend an intensive day learning techniques, gaining ideas and trying out new things out with UPROAR’s professional musicians. They will also gain insight into the music performed in our concert ‘Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto and New Music from Wales.
